Hey friend…

have you been asking yourself, “Is my prodigal child too far gone?”

Maybe every unanswered prayer… every difficult conversation… every holiday… every day that passes without change has made that question feel more real. Maybe you’ve quietly wondered, “What if I’ve already lost them?”

If that’s why you clicked this video… you’re in the right place.

Today we’re going to open the Scriptures together and discover what the Bible really says about prodigals—and why God never tells parents to measure hope by where their child is today, but by who He is.

____________

Is My Prodigal Child Too Far Gone? | What the Bible Really Says

Let’s open our Bibles together.

Today we’re going to walk through five simple truths that can bring hope back into your waiting.

STEP 1 – God Loves Your Child More Than You Do

STEP 2 – The Good Shepherd Leaves the Ninety-Nine

STEP 3 – God Pursues in Ways You Cannot See

STEP 4 – What ‘Far from God’ Really Means

STEP 5 – Hope Is Rooted in God, Not Circumstances

We’ll begin by discovering a truth every parent needs to remember…
that God loves your child even more than you do.

Then we’ll see why Jesus never stopped searching for wandering people…

Next, we’ll discover how God is often working in ways you cannot see…

Then we’ll answer one of the biggest misconceptions parents carry…

And we’ll finish by learning how to anchor your hope…
not in your child’s circumstances…
but in God’s unchanging character.

By the end of today’s journey, you’ll understand why no prodigal is ever beyond God’s reach…

…and why biblical hope has never depended on what you can see.

____________

And stay with me until the end because every RESTORATION episode includes a practical toolkit you can return to whenever fear starts taking over.

TODAY’S TOOLKIT / Three Scriptures to Read When Despair Hits.

And if YOU’VE never trusted Jesus –

or you’re ready to come home to Him – we’ll pray together before YOU go.

____________

This is Guardians of Biblical Truth – your pathway to readiness for the return of Christ.

____________

One thing you should know about me…

I didn’t grow up in the Bible.

I knew who God was, but outside of Christmas, Easter, and an occasional prayer, I didn’t really know His Word.

For years, I looked back wishing I had known then what I know now. I carried a lot of regret as a mom, wondering what I would have done differently if I had been grounded in Scripture.

But God has been teaching me something beautiful…

He isn’t limited by my past.

He’s still writing redemption stories.

I’m Lori Ann Moeszinger, and here at Guardians of Biblical Truth, we open the Scriptures together because I believe it’s never too late for God to begin restoring a family.

So if you need Hope with Handles… keep watching.

____________

Before we answer today’s question…

let me show you where we’re headed.

This is Episode 2 of a four-part foundation designed to steady your heart before we ever talk about strategies.

Because before we learn what to do…

we need to understand who God is.

Last time… we talked about what parents often do first when a child walks away…

and why panic is never God’s starting place.

Today… we’re answering one of the hardest questions a parent can ask:

“Is my prodigal child too far gone?”

Next time… we’ll tackle another question that quietly keeps many parents awake at night:

“What did I do wrong?”

We’ll separate false guilt…

from biblical responsibility.

Then we’ll finish this first module’s journey by learning

how to wait on God

without losing your peace…

or your hope.

Each episode builds on the one before it.

One conversation.

One Scripture.

One faithful step at a time.

Now…

let’s answer today’s question.

____________

STEP 1 – God Loves Your Child More Than You Do

Let’s begin with the truth every prodigal parent needs before anything else:

God loves your child more than you do.

I know that may sound impossible.

Because you remember their first breath.

You know their laugh.

You know the little details no one else notices.

You have prayed prayers over them no one else has heard.

But as deep as your love is…

God’s love goes deeper.

Before your child was ever placed in your arms, they were already known by Him.

Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the belly I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet unto the nations.”

Now, Jeremiah had a specific calling from God.

But the principle matters.

God is not introduced to our children at birth.

He knows them before we ever do.

That means your child’s story did not begin with your parenting.

It began in the knowledge of God.

That takes a burden off your shoulders.

You are not the author of your child’s soul.

God is.

You are not the Savior.

Jesus is.

You are not the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit of God is.

And that matters because when a child walks away, parents often feel like everything depends on them.

If I say the right thing…

If I pray the right way…

If I had done something differently…

But Scripture reminds us that God’s love is not weaker than yours.

It is stronger.

Listen to the heart of Jesus.

Matthew 19:14 – “But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto Me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

Jesus welcomed children.

He valued them.

He defended their access to Him.

And friend, He has not stopped caring about your child because they grew older, wandered farther, or made painful choices.

Your child may be far from church.

Far from Scripture.

Far from your table.

But they are not beyond the sight of God.

David said it this way:

Psalm 139:7–10 – “Where shall I go from your spirit? or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall your hand lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

That is not just poetry.

That is hope.

You may not know where your child is spiritually today.

But God does.

You may not know what they are thinking.

But God does.

You may not know what conversation, memory, Scripture, conviction, or quiet mercy He may use.

But God does.

So here is today’s first quick win:

Stop measuring God’s love by your child’s distance.

Distance may describe where your child is.

It does not describe where God is.

God has not left.

God has not forgotten.

God has not stopped seeing.

And God has not asked you to love your child more than He does.

He has asked you to trust the One who loved them first.

So when despair says,

“They are gone,”

answer with truth:

“They may be wandering, but God still sees them.”

And when fear says,

“No one can reach them now,”

answer with Scripture:

“The presence of God is not limited by distance.”

That is where hope begins.

Not in what you see today…

but in who God has always been.

____________

Have you ever noticed…

that when someone you love walks away from God…

your world quietly begins shrinking?

Your conversations change.

Your prayers become heavier.

Even joyful moments can carry an ache in the background.

Not because you love God less…

but because you love your child so much.

Maybe that’s where you are today.

THE EXHAUSTED BELIEVER…

If that’s you…

you’ve prayed the same prayers so many times you wonder if you’re simply repeating yourself.

You aren’t running out of love.

You’re running out of strength.

But today I want you to hear this:

God’s love for your child has never grown tired.

While you’ve needed sleep…

He has never stopped watching.

While you’ve wondered what to pray next…

He has never stopped pursuing.

THE ANXIOUS WATCHER

Maybe every notification makes your heart race.

You wonder where they are.

Who they’re with.

What they’re believing now.

Your imagination fills in the gaps faster than the facts.

Friend…

before you saw that post…

God had already seen your child.

Nothing surprises Him.

Nothing catches Him off guard.

He is already present where your fear keeps trying to go.

THE SILENT WATCHER

Perhaps no one even knows.

You smile at church.

You serve faithfully.

When someone asks how the family is doing…

you simply say,

“We’re doing okay.”

But inside…

your heart whispers,

“Lord… please bring them home.”

If that’s your story…

you’re not alone.

Some of the deepest prayers are the ones no one else hears.

And God hears every one of them.

Here’s what all three of these parents have in common.

They’re carrying a burden they were never meant to carry alone.

Because somewhere along the way…

they quietly began believing their love had to be greater than God’s.

It doesn’t.

Your love matters.

Your prayers matter.

Your faithfulness matters.

But none of them replace the relentless love of the Good Shepherd.

Today…

you don’t have to convince God to care about your child.

He already does.

Long before you prayed your first prayer…

He loved them first.

One Practical Step

One of the biggest changes I’ve watched happen in prodigal parents isn’t always what happens to the child first…

it’s what happens to the parent.

The moment they stop believing,

“Everything depends on me,”

and start believing,

“Everything is already in God’s hands,”

their prayers begin to change.

They stop praying from panic…

and begin praying from trust.

They stop trying to control every outcome…

and begin resting in God’s character.

That’s not giving up.

That’s placing the burden where it has always belonged.

Think about a shepherd.

A shepherd doesn’t stop looking because a sheep wandered.

In fact…

the wandering sheep becomes the focus of his attention.

That’s exactly how Jesus describes Himself.

Your child may have wandered from you…

but they have never wandered beyond the Shepherd’s reach.

____________

So if God loves your child more than you do…

why do we still live with so much fear?

Because love and panic cannot lead us at the same time.

In our next step, we’ll discover how to stop the panic spiral and replace fear with the steady peace that comes from trusting God’s heart.

____________

STEP 2 – The Good Shepherd Leaves the Ninety-Nine

Now that we know God hasn’t stopped loving your child…

let’s answer another question many parents quietly carry.

“Is God still pursuing them?”

Jesus answered that question Himself.

Listen carefully to His words.

Luke 15:4–7 – “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, does not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost… I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”

Notice something remarkable.

Jesus never says the shepherd waits for the sheep to find its way home.

The shepherd goes looking.

That changes everything.

Many parents picture themselves chasing their child while God watches from a distance.

But Scripture paints the opposite picture.

God is already pursuing.

The Good Shepherd is already moving.

Your prayers are not convincing Him to care.

They are joining what He is already doing.

And notice another word Jesus uses.

He says the shepherd goes after the sheep “until he find it.”

The emphasis is on the shepherd’s determination.

The story isn’t about how clever the sheep is.

It’s about how faithful the shepherd is.

Now, this doesn’t mean God forces anyone to believe.

Throughout Scripture, God honors the reality of human choice.

Love is never coerced.

But it does mean no wandering heart escapes His notice.

No road is too unfamiliar.

No conversation is wasted.

No memory of childhood faith is forgotten by Him.

Think about your own life.

How many people…

how many conversations…

how many unexpected moments…

did God weave together before you finally understood His invitation?

Looking back, many believers realize God was pursuing them long before they recognized Him.

The same may be true for your child today.

You may only see silence.

God may be arranging encounters.

You may see resistance.

God may be planting seeds.

You may see distance.

God sees the entire journey.

That doesn’t remove the pain of waiting.

But it transforms the meaning of waiting.

Instead of asking,

“God, where are You?”

you begin asking,

“Lord, help me trust what You’re already doing.”

That is a very different prayer.

Here’s today’s practical step.

The next time fear tells you,

“Nothing is happening,”

stop for a moment.

Open your Bible to Luke 15.

Read the words of Jesus aloud.

Then thank God—not because you’ve already seen the outcome—but because your Shepherd is still pursuing the sheep you love.

Faith isn’t pretending everything is fine.

Faith is choosing to believe the Shepherd is still working when you cannot yet see Him.

That’s the promise of Luke 15.

Your child may have wandered.

But the Shepherd has never stopped searching.

____________

One of the biggest shifts I see in parents happens when they stop believing they’re the only one searching.

Until then, every unanswered text…

every holiday…

every difficult conversation…

feels like another reminder that they have to carry this family on their own.

But then Scripture reframes the picture.

THE RETURNING BELIEVER

Maybe you’ve walked with Jesus for years.

You know these verses.

But today you hear them differently.

Not as a story about someone else’s salvation…

but as a picture of your own child.

For the first time, you realize the Shepherd is already on the road.

THE QUESTIONER

Perhaps you’ve asked,

“If God loves my child…

why hasn’t anything changed?”

That’s an honest question.

Scripture doesn’t always explain God’s timing.

But it repeatedly reveals His character.

And His character is this:

He pursues the lost.

You can trust His heart, even while you wait for His timing.

THE ISOLATED REMNANT BELIEVER

Maybe you feel like you’re carrying this burden by yourself.

Few people understand.

Conversations become awkward.

Some have quietly stopped asking about your child.

But the Shepherd never stopped.

While others moved on…

He kept pursuing.

While you wondered if anyone remembered…

He never forgot.

Here’s what these parents discover.

Hope doesn’t begin when the prodigal comes home.

Hope begins the moment we remember the Shepherd never left.

That truth doesn’t erase the ache.

But it gives the ache an anchor.

Because your child’s future is not resting on your ability to chase them.

It is resting in the hands of the Shepherd who knows every path they’ve taken.

____________

So if the Good Shepherd is already pursuing your child…

why does it sometimes feel like nothing is happening?

In our next step, we’ll discover how God often works in ways we cannot see—and why unseen doesn’t mean undone.

____________

STEP 3 – God Pursues in Ways You Cannot See

By now we’ve discovered two beautiful truths.

God loves your child.

And the Good Shepherd is still pursuing them.

But that naturally leads to another question.

“If God is pursuing my child… why can’t I see anything changing?”

That’s one of the hardest parts of waiting.

We naturally measure God’s activity by visible results.

If we don’t see movement…

we assume nothing is happening.

But Scripture teaches us something very different.

Listen to the words of God through the prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah 55:8–9 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

What a comforting reminder.

God’s work is often invisible before it becomes visible.

His thoughts…

His timing…

His methods…

are higher than ours.

Think about a seed.

Once it’s planted…

nothing appears to happen.

The ground looks exactly the same.

But beneath the surface…

life is already growing.

Roots are forming.

What is unseen…

is preparing for what will eventually be seen.

God often works the same way.

The Holy Spirit may be stirring a heart…

through a conversation you’ll never hear.

A memory from childhood may suddenly return.

A verse once memorized may come flooding back.

A difficult circumstance may awaken a longing for truth.

You don’t see any of it.

But God does.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that our perspective is limited.

2 Corinthians 5:7 – “(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)”

Notice what Paul doesn’t say.

He doesn’t say,

“Ignore reality.”

He says,

Walk by faith.

Faith simply recognizes that God’s work is often larger than what our eyes can presently observe.

Jesus also reminded Nicodemus that God’s Spirit works in ways we cannot always explain.

John 3:8 – “The wind blows where it lists, and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell where it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”

You can’t see the wind.

But you see its effects.

The same is true of God’s Spirit.

You may not see what He is doing today.

But that doesn’t mean He isn’t moving.

Friend…

some of the greatest miracles in Scripture happened after long seasons of silence.

Joseph waited.

Hannah waited.

David waited.

The disciples waited.

Waiting has never meant God was absent.

Sometimes…

waiting is where God does His deepest work.

So here’s today’s practical step.

The next time you’re tempted to say,

“Nothing is happening,”

change one word.

Instead say,

“Nothing is happening… that I can see.”

That small change is actually a profound act of faith.

Because it leaves room for God’s unseen work.

Hope grows when we remember that heaven is never limited by what earth can presently observe.

The Shepherd who pursues…

is also the Shepherd who patiently works…

even when His work remains hidden from our eyes.

____________

One of the greatest temptations during the waiting…

is believing that silence means God has stopped working.

But silence and absence are not the same thing.

Then there’s…

THE QUESTIONER.

You honestly want to understand.

“Lord… why can’t I see anything changing?”

“Why haven’t You answered yet?”

Those are real questions.

But remember…

God has never promised to explain every step of His work.

He has promised His presence.

Sometimes faith means trusting God’s heart…

before we understand His methods.

Then there’s…

THE DEBATE WATCHER.

You’ve listened to countless opinions.

Everyone seems to have a formula.

A timeline.

A reason.

But eventually…

every opinion reaches its limit.

Scripture doesn’t give us every detail.

It gives us Someone we can trust.

That’s enough to keep walking.

And then there’s..

THE ENCOURAGER.

Even while your own heart aches…

you keep pointing others toward hope.

Never underestimate that.

Sometimes God strengthens our own faith…

as we remind someone else of His promises.

And perhaps that’s what He’s doing in you today.

Here’s what all three of these parents are learning.

The Questioner.

The Debate Watcher.

The Encourager.

None of them can see everything God is doing.

But none of them need to.

Because their confidence isn’t built on visible evidence.

It’s built on the faithful character of God.

That’s the difference between wishful thinking…

and biblical hope.

One Practical Step

The next time you think,

“God isn’t doing anything,”

pause.

Write down three ways you’ve already seen God’s faithfulness in your own life.

If He has been faithful before…

His character has not changed today.

Sometimes remembering yesterday’s faithfulness…

gives us courage to trust Him with tomorrow.

____________

If God is working—even when we can’t see it—then one question still remains:

How should we think about a child who seems so far away?

Next, let’s discover what the Bible really means by “far from God”—and why distance is not the same as abandonment.

____________

Before we continue…

don’t miss today’s toolkit.

I’m going to give you three Bible passages I return to whenever fear tries to convince me my prodigal is too far gone.

Write them down.

Keep them close.

And let God’s Word become louder than your despair.

____________

STORY OF AWAKENING

Can I tell YOU about someone?

Envision a crossroads, not of roads and signposts, but of destinies and decision. Here stands Anna, a diligent nurse, whose life has been a testament to service. The corridors of the hospital have known her steadfast stride, the rooms have felt her tender touch, yet her heart harbors an unrest, a seeking for something that the sterility of the words could not cleanse or heal.

Anna’s dragon is doubt, a specter that casts long shadows over her many acts of kindness, a question that lingers in the afterglow of her daily sacrifices. “Is this all there is?” becomes her silent mantra, a refrain that follows her through the long nights and demanding days.

It is in a moment of exhaustion, her defenses worn and her spirit pliable, that Anna finds herself in the chapel beneath the hum of fluorescent lights. The Bible in the chapel is old and worn, much like the many souls who have sought its comfort. Her fingers, still careful from years of practice, open to a passage that seems to have been waiting just for her: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).

The specific details of this encounter—the cool touch of the wooden pew, the flickering of a candle’s flame, the quiet assurance in the chapel’s hush—become the backdrop for a rebirth. The concept of being “born again” was not alien to her; she has witnessed the first breaths of many new lives in her line of work. But now, it beckons to her as a personal genesis, an intimate awakening to a faith that is vibrant and alive.

Anna’s birth of faith is not a loud declaration but a soft yielding, gentle release of the doubts that have long encased her heart. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). With these words, the seed of faith takes root in her soul, and she senses the stirrings of a spiritual renaissance.

This new birth is not marked by the cries of a newborn, but by the silent lifting of a burden, the feeling of being held in arms far stronger than her own. Anna’s commitment to trust Christ for salvation becomes a wellspring of hope and a fountain of new purpose. Her service in the hospital gains a deeper dimension, infused with a love that flows from an inexhaustible source.

Her story, this birth of faith, becomes a testament to the transforming power of belief. As Anna walks the halls, her steps are lighter, her smile brighter, for within her beats the heart of one reborn. To those who observe her, both colleagues and patients alike, she is a living epistle, embodying the promise that “whosoever believes in Him may have eternal life” (John 3:15).

Anna’s journey, her moment of divine commitment, whispers to all who cross her path, “There is more to life, more to you. Faith is born in a moment but lasts an eternity. Come, be born again into a living hope.”

____________

Maybe today’s Story of Awakening wasn’t actually for YOU.

Maybe…

it was for the person God quietly placed on YOUR heart.

The son…
who insists he doesn’t need God anymore.

The daughter…
who says she’s “fine,”
but you’ve watched her drift farther away.

The parent…
who has almost stopped praying…
because hope has become exhausting.

Did someone come to mind?

Because if they did…

maybe this conversation wasn’t only meant to encourage YOU.

Maybe it was meant to reach them too.

If someone came to mind while hearing Anna’s story…

consider sharing this video with them.

Not because you have all the answers…

but because sometimes God uses one Scripture…

one conversation…

or one story…

to remind someone they are never beyond His reach.

You never know which moment becomes the one God uses to awaken hope again.

____________

STEP 4 – What ‘Far from God’ Really Means

By now we’ve discovered that God loves your child…

the Good Shepherd is still pursuing them…

and God is often working in ways we cannot yet see.

But here’s another phrase parents often say:

“My child is so far from God.”

Now, I understand exactly what they mean.

They may have stopped reading the Bible.

They may have walked away from church.

They may be making choices that break your heart.

Spiritually speaking, they may indeed be living far from the Lord.

But here’s the question.

Does their distance mean God has stopped reaching toward them?

The Bible answers that with a resounding no.

Jesus tells the story we know as the Prodigal Son.

Listen carefully.

Luke 15:20 – “And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”

Notice something beautiful.

The son was still “a great way off.”

He hadn’t reached the house.

He hadn’t finished his apology.

He hadn’t restored the relationship.

Yet the father was already watching.

Already moved with compassion.

Already running toward him.

Jesus isn’t merely telling us about an earthly father.

He’s revealing the heart of our heavenly Father.

God delights in receiving those who turn to Him.

That doesn’t minimize the seriousness of sin.

The prodigal truly had wandered.

He truly needed repentance.

But his distance did not extinguish the father’s love.

Nor did it destroy the father’s hope.

The Apostle Peter reminds us of God’s heart.

2 Peter 3:9 – “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

Notice God’s desire.

He is patient.

He calls people to repentance.

His heart is to save—not to abandon.

Parents often see only today’s choices.

God sees the entire story.

He knows every conversation.

Every conviction.

Every sleepless night.

Every moment when a wandering heart begins asking deeper questions.

We rarely see those moments.

He does.

Then listen to God’s invitation through Isaiah.

Isaiah 55:6–7 – “Seek you the LORD while He may be found, call you upon Him while He is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”

What a beautiful promise.

Notice the invitation.

Return unto the Lord.

Why?

Because there is mercy.

Because there is abundant pardon.

God does not invite people back because they deserve another chance.

He invites them because He is merciful.

So here’s today’s practical step.

When you’re tempted to say,

“My child is far from God,”

finish the sentence with biblical hope.

Say,

“My child is far from God… but never beyond His reach.”

That one sentence changes everything.

It doesn’t ignore reality.

It simply refuses to let reality have the final word.

Because Scripture teaches us that no wandering heart is hidden from the Shepherd…

and no sincere repentance is ever turned away by the Father.

That’s where hope lives.

Not in denying the distance…

but in believing God’s mercy reaches farther.

____________

Sometimes one sentence can quietly shape years of fear.

“They’re gone.”

The more we repeat it…

the more permanent it begins to sound.

But Scripture gives us a different picture.

Then there’s…

THE SKEPTICAL OBSERVER.

You’ve watched years pass.

Promises came and went.

You’ve learned not to get your hopes up too quickly.

So when someone says,

“Just believe,”

it can sound painfully simplistic.

Friend…

biblical hope isn’t pretending the road isn’t long.

It’s trusting the Father’s heart while the road is still long.

Then there’s…

THE HUNGRY DISCIPLE.

You don’t want clichés.

You want Scripture.

And that’s exactly why Luke 15 matters.

Jesus Himself tells us what the Father’s heart looks like.

Watching.

Waiting.

Ready to receive.

That truth becomes stronger than your fear.

Then there’s…

THE PROPHECY BURNOUT VIEWER.

You’ve spent so much time watching what’s happening in the world…

that you’ve forgotten what God is doing in individual hearts.

Remember this.

He is the Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine.

He is still calling people to repentance…

one soul at a time.

Including the one you’ve been praying for.

Here’s what these three viewers discover.

The Skeptical Observer.

The Hungry Disciple.

The Prophecy Burnout Viewer.

All three learn the same lesson.

“Far from God” describes a person’s present condition.

It does not describe the limits of God’s mercy.

That’s why we never stop praying.

Not because we’re ignoring reality…

but because we know the character of our God.

One Practical Step

This week, every time you’re tempted to say,

“They’re gone,”

replace those words with:

“They’re still being pursued by the Good Shepherd.”

Let biblical truth reshape your vocabulary…

because over time, it will also reshape your hope.

____________

Once we understand that God’s mercy reaches farther than our fears…

our hope begins to change.

So let’s finish today’s journey by discovering where lasting hope really belongs—not in changing circumstances, but in the unchanging character of God.

____________

STEP 5 – Hope Is Rooted in God, Not Circumstances

As we finish today’s journey…

I want to leave you with one truth that has carried countless believers through seasons of waiting.

Hope is not rooted in circumstances.

Hope is rooted in the character of God.

That’s important because circumstances constantly change.

Some days your child answers your phone call.

Some days they don’t.

Some days you hear encouraging news.

Other days your heart breaks all over again.

If your hope rises and falls with every circumstance…

you’ll live on an emotional roller coaster.

God offers something much steadier.

Listen to these beautiful words.

Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”

Everything around us changes.

Jesus does not.

Your emotions may change.

His faithfulness does not.

Your child’s choices may change.

His character does not.

That’s why biblical hope has such a firm foundation.

It isn’t built upon changing circumstances.

It’s built upon an unchanging Savior.

The prophet Jeremiah understood this in one of Israel’s darkest seasons.

He wrote in Lamentations:

Lamentations 3:21–23 – “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Your faithfulness.”

Notice where Jeremiah finds hope.

Not in his surroundings.

Not in an immediate solution.

He deliberately recalls God’s faithfulness.

Sometimes hope begins with remembering.

Remembering what God has already done.

Remembering who He has always been.

Remembering that His mercy is new every morning.

David makes the same choice.

Psalm 62:5–8 – “My soul, wait you only upon God; for my expectation is from Him. He only is My rock and My salvation: He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times; you people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us.” Selah.

Did you notice that phrase?

“My expectation is from Him.”

David wasn’t placing his ultimate expectation in changing circumstances.

He placed it in the God who never changes.

That doesn’t mean we stop praying for our prodigal.

Far from it.

It means our confidence rests in God’s faithfulness while we continue praying.

Because if your hope is anchored only to today’s circumstances…

fear will constantly move it.

But if your hope is anchored in God’s character…

it remains steady, even while you wait.

Here’s today’s practical step.

Every morning this week…

before checking your phone…

before thinking about your prodigal…

read one promise about God’s character.

Remind yourself who He is before you begin thinking about what’s happening around you.

Because peace grows when our first thought is not,

“What changed?”

but,

“God has not changed.”

That’s where lasting hope begins.

____________

One of the most beautiful changes I see in parents…

isn’t always in their circumstances.

It’s in their countenance.

The burden is still real.

The prayers continue.

But something inside them becomes steadier.

Why?

Because their hope has found a stronger foundation.

Then there’s…

THE SEEKER.

When you started this episode…

you were searching for hope.

Maybe you thought hope would come through better news.

Instead…

you discovered something even stronger.

Hope begins with knowing God more deeply.

Because the better we know Him…

the less fear controls us.

Then there’s…

THE ENCOURAGER.

You’ve learned something through your own waiting.

You can’t always change someone else’s circumstances.

But you can remind them who God is.

Sometimes one verse…

one prayer…

one conversation…

becomes the encouragement someone else needed to keep trusting.

And God often strengthens our own hearts as we strengthen others.

Then there’s…

THE LUKEWARM CHRISTIAN WAKING UP.

Perhaps this painful season has become an unexpected invitation.

Not because you wanted this trial…

but because God has used it to draw you closer to Himself.

Your child is still on your heart.

But now…

Jesus is becoming the center of your hope.

That’s transformation.

Here’s what these three viewers discover.

The Seeker.

The Encourager.

The Lukewarm Christian Waking Up.

They all learn the same lesson.

Hope isn’t something we manufacture.

Hope grows naturally…

when we keep our eyes on the unchanging character of God.

Because circumstances may change tomorrow.

But our Savior never will.

One Practical Step

Begin a “Faithfulness Journal.”

Each day, write down one way you’ve seen God’s faithfulness—whether in Scripture, in answered prayer, in His provision, or simply in His daily presence.

When discouragement comes, don’t start by reviewing your circumstances.

Review God’s faithfulness.

His character is the strongest foundation your hope will ever have.

____________

Today we’ve discovered that our hope isn’t anchored in changing circumstances—it is anchored in the unchanging character of God.

Before we close, I’d love to give you one practical tool from today’s toolkit—three powerful Scriptures you can turn to whenever despair begins whispering that it’s too late.

____________

TODAY’S TOOLKIT – Three Scriptures to Read When Despair Hits

Before we finish today’s lesson…

it’s time for Today’s Toolkit.

I’d like to place three Scriptures into your hands.

Not because they’ll magically remove the pain…

but because they’ll remind you where hope is found when despair begins whispering louder than truth.

I call these my “Hope Verses.”

Keep them in your Bible.

Write them on a 3×5 card.

Save them in your phone.

Return to them whenever your heart begins saying,

“It’s too late.”

  1. Luke 15:20

“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”

Whenever you feel like your prodigal is too far gone…

remember this:

The father was already watching.

Hope begins with the Father’s heart.

  1. Psalm 139:7

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?”

There is no place your child can go…

where God cannot reach them.

His presence is never limited by distance.

  1. Lamentations 3:22–23

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Tomorrow brings fresh mercy.

Not recycled mercy.

Not leftover mercy.

New mercy.

Every single morning.

Friend…

despair always wants you to focus on what you cannot see.

Scripture gently turns your eyes back to what has never changed.

The faithful heart of God.

So this week…

when fear begins speaking…

don’t answer it with another anxious thought.

Answer it with God’s Word.

Because hope grows strongest…

when Scripture becomes louder than despair.

Before we move on…

I’d like to leave you with one thought.

Remember this…

No one is beyond God’s reach. Hope isn’t rooted in your circumstances – it’s rooted in the relentless love and pursuing heart of God.

____________

Before we wrap…

If today’s message strengthened YOUR confidence in Christ…

comment “READY.”

I read those comments every week,

and I love seeing believers encourage one another.

And before YOU leave…

tell me one step YOU’RE going to take this week.

Maybe it’s opening your Bible tomorrow morning.

Maybe it’s talking with Jesus for the first time in a long time.

Maybe it’s sharing the Gospel with someone.

Or maybe it’s simply choosing obedience in one area of YOUR life.

Because here at Guardians of Biblical Truth…

we believe Scripture becomes transformation one step at a time.

____________

WRAP UP – From Panic to Peace

As we come to the end of today’s journey…

let’s remember where we started.

You asked one of the hardest questions a parent can ask:

“Is my prodigal child too far gone?”

Today, God’s Word gave us a different perspective.

We discovered that God loves your child even more than you do…

that the Good Shepherd is still pursuing those who wander…

that God is often working in ways we cannot yet see…

that “far from God” never means beyond His mercy…

and that our hope is rooted, not in changing circumstances, but in the unchanging character of God.

So here’s your one takeaway this week:

Never measure God’s faithfulness by what you can see today.

Measure it by who He has always been.

When fear whispers,

“They’re gone,”

answer with Scripture.

When despair tells you,

“Nothing is happening,”

remember the Shepherd is still searching.

And when you don’t know what tomorrow holds…

anchor your heart in the God who already does.

Friend…

if your child is still wandering today…

don’t stop praying.

Don’t stop trusting.

And don’t stop hoping.

Because our hope has never rested in how far our prodigals have wandered.

Our hope rests in the Shepherd who never stops pursuing the lost.

One promise…

one prayer…

one faithful day…

at a time.

____________

WHERE WE GO NEXT

Now let me show you where we’re headed next.

This wheel is our journey…

through the life of a parent praying for a prodigal.

Last time…
we answered the question,

“When your child walks away from God… what should I do first?”

Today…

we discovered something even more important:

your child is never beyond the reach of the Good Shepherd.

Next time…

we’re going to answer another question almost every parent eventually asks:

“What did I do wrong?”

Because when someone you love walks away…

it’s almost impossible

not to replay every conversation…

every decision…

every mistake…

wondering…

“Was this somehow my fault?”

Together…

we’ll open the Scriptures…

and discover the difference

between healthy conviction…

and false guilt.

Because God never asks parents

to carry a burden

He never intended them to bear.

Every spoke builds on the one before it.

One conversation.

One prayer.

One month.

One faithful step at a time.

Because restoration…

isn’t built in a single breakthrough.

It’s built…

by trusting Jesus…

one day at a time.

GUARDIANS OF BIBLICAL TRUTH FORUM

This was a lot to take in…

And honestly…

it’s only the beginning.

Around here, we believe in Hope with Handles—

hope YOU can actually hold onto,

one faithful step at a time.

Because faith isn’t just something we believe…

it’s something we live.

____________

SCRIPTURE · STORY · STEP

That’s why we follow one simple rhythm:

SCRIPTURE • STORY • STEP.

Scripture tells us what God says.

Story helps God’s truth become personal.

Step is where faith becomes the way YOU actually live.

Because every checkpoint moves YOU from awareness to obedience, from belief to readiness, from saying “Amen” to living “Here I am, Lord.”

And that’s the journey we’re taking together.

One Scripture.

One Story.

One Step.

At a time.

PRAYER OF FAITH

Before we go… if you don’t know Jesus,

or if you’ve drifted far from Him

and you want to come home…

pray this with me.

Put your hands together and repeat after me:

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

If you believe that, He is in your heart right now, and you shall be saved.

And if you want to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, pray this prayer…

Father, in Jesus’ name,

Thank You for Your Word. Help us not just hear it – but obey it. Forgive us. Cleanse us. We repent, and we turn from sin back to You. Strengthen every weary parent watching. Hold them up in the waiting, and guard their heart from despair. Lord, reach our prodigals – wherever they are – convict them, protect them, and draw them home. Renew our minds, fill us with Your Spirit, and make us steady – without fear and without compromise. We give You our yes.

Amen.
