The doctrine of “once saved always saved” has sparked significant debate within Christian communities. Often, this concept is viewed through the lens of eternal security, suggesting that once a person has accepted Christ, their salvation is guaranteed regardless of future actions or behaviors. However, a closer examination of biblical teachings reveals a more nuanced perspective that challenges this view. This blog explores the critical differences between entering and inheriting the Kingdom of God, underpinned by scriptural references that provide insight into the conditional nature of salvation.
Entering vs. Inheriting the Kingdom
The journey of a believer begins at the moment of salvation—entering the Kingdom of God. This initial step is often described as being “born again,” a pivotal moment of transformation and acceptance into God’s family. However, this is merely the starting point. The Apostle Paul, who addressed his epistles to the Church rather than to non-believers, makes an important distinction between merely entering the Kingdom and actually inheriting it.
The Conditional Nature of Inheritance
Paul’s writings to the Church highlight a conditional aspect of salvation that is often overlooked. In his epistles, such as 1 Corinthians 6:9 and Galatians 5:19-21, Paul warns that wrongdoers, those who live in sin after accepting Christ, will not inherit the Kingdom of God. This distinction is crucial because it shows that the actions and lifestyle choices of believers post-conversion play a significant role in their spiritual trajectory.
“Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men…” 1 Corinthians 6:9
“…and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:21
These scriptures indicate that inheritance of the Kingdom is not automatically granted by the initial act of salvation. Instead, it requires a continual commitment to living a life that aligns with God’s commandments.
Once Saved Always Saved: The Danger of Complacency
The once saved always saved danger for many believers lies in becoming complacent after their initial conversion. It is not uncommon for some to ‘park’ at the point of salvation, dabbling occasionally in worldly pursuits without a full commitment to spiritual growth and holiness. This state of spiritual stagnation is what Paul addresses when he emphasizes the peril of living a compromised life.
The Final Judgment
Matthew 7:22 sheds light on the sobering reality of the final judgment: “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?'”
Here, Jesus highlights that even those who performed miracles in His name are not guaranteed entry into the Kingdom if they lived a life of compromise. The key takeaway is that grace, while abundant, does not blanket-cover a lifestyle that contradicts the teachings of Christ.
Conclusion: Once Saved Always Saved Is False Doctrine
The doctrine of once saved always saved is appealing because it offers a sense of security. However, the Scriptures urge a deeper, ongoing commitment to spiritual integrity and holiness. Salvation is not just a one-time event but a dynamic, living process that demands perseverance, repentance, and continual growth in faith. For those living in a state of compromise, it is a call to wake up and realign with the path that leads to true inheritance of the Kingdom of God.
For believers, the message is clear: do not be deceived by a mere entrance into faith. Strive towards a life that not only enters but also inherits the Kingdom through righteous living and steadfast faithfulness.
