1 Peter 1:13–18 (NIV): 13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,

What Is a Real Christian?

A real Christian is not merely a title but a transformation. It’s a life turned towards Christ, marked by a continuous process of growing closer to Him. As 1 Peter 1:19–25 states, this transformation is rooted in the work of Christ, our sinless Savior. His life, death, and resurrection are the cornerstones of our faith and hope.

1 Peter 1:19–25 – The essence of our Christian life faith is grounded in Christ’s sacrifice:

• Verses 19–21: Peter emphasizes that believers were redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, who is described metaphorically as a lamb without defect—echoing the Old Testament sacrifices that pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. Christ’s mission and purpose were set before the foundation of the world, but it was revealed fully in the time of the apostles for the sake of believers. Through Christ, believers are brought to faith in God, who raised Him from the dead, thereby placing their hope and faith securely in God.
• Verses 22–25: These verses shift to the ethical implications of this faith. Peter calls believers to a deep, sincere love for one another, a command grounded in their new birth through the imperishable word of God. The metaphor of perishable like grass and flowers versus the imperishable word of God illustrates the enduring nature of the divine word compared to the fleeting glory of human achievements. This enduring word is what was preached to the believers, forming the foundation of their ongoing faith and conduct.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) – A Christian is a new creation, where the old has passed, and the new has come:

• “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Assurance of Salvation

Doubts about one’s salvation are common, especially for new believers. But the Bible offers us assurance. 1 John 1:9 reassures us that confession leads to forgiveness, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 speaks of the transformative power of being in Christ.

1 John 1:9 (NIV) – Confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing:

• “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) – The transformative power of being in Christ:

• “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Four Habits of Successful Christians

According to Scripture, successful Christians leading Christian lives embody four key habits:

1. Bible Reading – The Bible is God’s communication with us. It is essential to read, understand, and apply the Bible in our daily lives (Psalm 110:11, 2 Timothy 3:16–17). The importance of Scripture in our lives:

• Psalm 119:11 (NIV):“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
• 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV):“16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2. Prayer – Prayer is our communication with God. It’s a time to share our joys, struggles, and seek guidance (Luke 18:1, Philippians 4:6–7). The power and necessity of prayer:

• Luke 18:1 (NIV):“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”
• Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV):“6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

3. Fellowship – Fellowship with other believers strengthens our faith and provides support and encouragement (Hebrews 10:24–25). The importance of fellowship in the Christian life:

• Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV):“24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

4. Sharing Faith – Witnessing or sharing our faith with others is our duty as Christians. It’s how we communicate God’s love and salvation to the world (Acts 1:8). Our call to witness and share our faith:

• Acts 1:8 (NIV):“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Living Out Our Faith

Living the Christian life means actively practicing these habits and consistently aligning our actions with God’s will. It involves growing in knowledge, love, and obedience to Christ (John 17:3). It’s a journey of transformation where we embrace God’s commandments, including loving Him with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37).

Scriptural Encouragement:

John 17:3 (NIV) – Knowing God and Jesus is the essence of eternal life.

• “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

Matthew 22:37 (NIV) – The greatest commandment emphasizing our love for God.

• “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'”

Living the Christian life is a rewarding yet challenging journey.
