How Sin Enters Part 2 | Understanding and Overcoming Temptation

Welcome back to “How Sin Enters Part 2” This is Guardians of Biblical Truth, and we’re diving deeper into the topic of how sin enters our lives. Our focus remains on living righteously before God, not just in our eyes or by societal standards. Remember, understanding every prophecy is futile if we’re not living ready for the Lord’s return. As Matthew 24:44 emphasizes, we must always be prepared for His unexpected arrival.

The Continuation of Joshua 7

In Joshua 7, we explore the sin of Achan, who took forbidden spoils during the conquest of Jericho, leading to Israel’s defeat at Ai. This incident beautifully illustrates the process of sin’s entry into our lives and the importance of repentance and redemption.

The Four Steps of Sin’s Entry Revisited

Last week, we discussed the first two steps in Achan’s confession:

1. “I saw” – The Peek at Sin: Highlighting the importance of guarding our ‘eye gate.’

2. “I coveted” – The Passion for Sin: The stage where attraction turns into a sinful desire.

Today, we explore the final two steps in Achan’s process of sin:

3. “I took” – The Participation in Sin: The actual act of sinning, where thought and desire turn into action. This stage often marks the point of no return, where one crosses the line into disobedience against God. It’s crucial to recognize that by the time most people address their sin at this stage, they are already significantly entangled in it.

4. “I hid” – The Concealment of Sin: Achan’s attempt to hide his sin is a classic human response to wrongdoing. We tend to hide our sins from others and even attempt to conceal them from God. However, as Genesis 3:8-9 shows with Adam and Eve, hiding from God is futile. He knows all and sees all, and the only path to restoration is through confession and repentance.

How Sin Enters Part 2: The Consequences of Hidden Sin

The severity of Achan’s punishment serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of unrepented sin. His confession was not out of a contrite heart but rather because he was caught. There is a significant difference between godly sorrow and remorse for being caught. Hidden sin, especially when it’s only acknowledged due to exposure, often brings about more severe consequences.

Daily Repentance: A Path to Righteousness

Regular self-examination and repentance are crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship with God. As Christians, we should not wait for Sundays to cleanse our hearts. Daily prayer, including requests for forgiveness for known and unknown sins, keeps us in right standing with God.

The Importance of Full Biblical Counsel

In preaching and teaching, it is imperative to deliver the full counsel of God, not just parts that are comfortable or pleasing. Addressing sin, heaven, hell, and redemption are all crucial elements of biblical teaching. Avoidance of these topics does a disservice to the congregation and hinders spiritual growth.

Closing Thoughts: Victory Over Sin

As we close this session, remember that victory over sin is not about being perfect but about being aware and proactive in your spiritual journey. Regularly address your spiritual health by guarding your senses, particularly what you allow through your ‘eye gate.’ Be quick to repent and seek God’s forgiveness, thus maintaining a close and healthy relationship with Him.

Invitation to Salvation

As we conclude, l extend an invitation to those who have not yet accepted Christ or who may need to rededicate their lives to Him. Salvation is available to everyone – “whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Let’s pray together, confessing our sins, and seeking God’s forgiveness and salvation.

Remember, each day is an opportunity to grow closer to God, to live a life that honors Him, and to prepare for His return. Stay vigilant, stay repentant, and stay in His Word. May God bless you on your journey to holiness and readiness for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In His Service,
