Embracing Assurance of Salvation | Intellect, Emotions, and Will

Welcome to our insightful discussion on the assurance of salvation, a cornerstone of our faith journey. Today, we delve into how intellect, emotions, and will—three critical aspects of our being—are intertwined in the process of salvation. Understanding this interplay provides a deeper insight into our spiritual lives and strengthens our faith foundation.

Intellect and Salvation: An Enlightened Faith

Contrary to the common misconception that sees assurance of salvation as merely a blind leap of faith, scripture emphasizes the role of intellect in understanding and embracing God’s truths. 1 John 2:1-6 urges us to engage intellectually with our faith, highlighting that our belief is not without insight but is an enlightened choice underpinned by understanding and truth.

John 2:1-6 (NIV): 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Similarly, Luke’s methodical approach in Luke 1:1-4, where he meticulously documents the life of Jesus, exemplifies the harmony of faith and reason, reinforcing that intellectual rigor complements spiritual belief.

Luke 1:1-4 (NIV): 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

The Role of Emotions in Experiencing Salvation

Emotions are integral to our experiences of assurance of salvation, reflecting the depth and personal nature of our spiritual journeys. Created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26), we possess emotions that mirror His own.

Genesis 1:26 (NIV): “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'”

The New Testament presents varied emotional responses to assurance of salvation, from Paul’s dramatic conversion to Timothy’s steady faith growth, showcasing the broad spectrum of emotional experiences among believers. This diversity illustrates that while salvation has a common destination, the emotional journey can be highly personal and unique.

Willful Commitment: Choosing the Path of Salvation

Salvation involves more than intellectual agreement and emotional experience; it requires a deliberate decision—a willful commitment to follow Christ. The narrative of free will begins in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15-17), highlighting that our spiritual journey is marked by choices.

Genesis 2:15-17 (NIV): 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.’

Deuteronomy 28:1,15 further underscores this, showing that our decisions to obey or disregard God’s commandments lead to blessings or curses.

Deuteronomy 28:1 and 15 (NIV): 1 “If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 15 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you.”

Romans 10:17 stresses the necessity of continual obedience and renewal of our commitment through hearing and responding to God’s Word.

Romans 10:17 (NIV): 17 “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

Conclusion: Assurance of Salvation

The assurance of salvation is not a single-threaded belief but a complex interplay of intellect, emotions, and will. Each element plays a vital role in shaping our spiritual paths and ensuring a robust, dynamic faith that withstands the tests of time. As we explore these facets, we are called to a holistic approach in our relationship with God, embracing each aspect of our being in our pursuit of His truth and grace.

Let us close this session in prayer, seeking God’s wisdom and guidance in harmonizing our intellect, emotions, and will with our assurance of salvation as we continue to walk in His light and truth.
