Find A Good Church | A Guide Rooted in Scripture

Welcome, beloved in Christ. As we gather in fellowship, let’s embark on an in-depth exploration of a pivotal question in our Christian journey: “How do I find a good church?” This question resonates not just with those newly reborn in Christ but also with seasoned believers who find themselves reevaluating their spiritual home. Our discussion today is not based on personal opinions but firmly anchored in the infallible Word of God. Let’s turn to the Scriptures, our eternal compass, to explore the seven defining traits of a healthy church.

Understanding the Church through Acts

The Book of Acts offers a pristine blueprint of the early church, a model for us to emulate. Acts 2:42-47 provides a vivid portrayal of the early Christian community’s life. They were devoted to the apostles’ teachings, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. This snapshot gives us a framework to identify the qualities of a sound church.

Acts 2:42-47 (NIV): 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  1. Devotion to Sound Doctrine

First and foremost is the church’s commitment to sound doctrine. As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” To find a good church, look for the qualities steeped in sound doctrine is crucial for our spiritual nourishment and growth. Investigate whether the church’s teachings align with the Bible’s core truths. Does the church uphold the essentials of the Christian faith — salvation through Christ alone, the deity of Jesus, the resurrection, and the authority of Scripture?

  1. Authentic Fellowship

Next, we examine the role of fellowship. Fellowship in the biblical sense goes beyond social interactions; it involves sharing life in Christ. 1 John 1:7 explains, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another…” Seek a church where fellowship is Christ-centered, promoting spiritual growth and accountability among believers.

  1. A Vibrant Prayer Life

A church’s dedication to prayer is a testament to its reliance on God. Acts 2:42 emphasizes that the early church was devoted to prayer, acknowledging its power and necessity. Prayer is our lifeline to God, a vital aspect of a healthy church. Look for a church where prayer is not just a ritual but a dynamic, integral part of its life.

  1. Worship in Spirit and Truth

Worship is our response to God’s glory and grace. John 4:24 reminds us that “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” Worship in a healthy church should be heartfelt and focused on God, not merely a formality or entertainment.

  1. Emphasis on Discipleship

A healthy church invests in discipleship, guiding believers to grow in their faith. Matthew 28:19-20 commands us to make disciples and teach them to obey Christ’s commands. This ongoing process is vital for mature faith. Seek a church that provides resources and opportunities for discipleship, helping you grow in your understanding and application of the Scriptures.

Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV): 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

  1. Leadership and Congregational Integrity

Integrity in both leadership and the congregation is crucial. Titus 1:7-9 provides guidelines for church leaders, emphasizing godliness and moral uprightness. To find a good church, observe whether the church leadership demonstrates transparency, accountability, and lives that reflect their teaching.

Titus 1:7-9 (NIV): 7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.

  1. Commitment to the Great Commission

Finally, a healthy church is actively involved in fulfilling the Great Commission. Mark 16:15 instructs, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” This involves local and global missions, evangelism, and community outreach. A church should not only nurture its congregation but also engage in extending God’s kingdom beyond its walls.

Practical Steps in Finding a Church

  • To find a good church that embodies these traits requires prayerful discernment and active engagement. Here are some practical steps to guide your search:
  • Prayer and Guidance: Seek God’s direction in your search. Pray for clarity and wisdom to discern the right church for you and your family.
  • Visit and Observe: Visit multiple churches. Observe their services, leadership style, and how they practice their faith. How is the sermon? Is it biblically sound and relevant? How is the congregation’s involvement?
  • Inquire and Participate: Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Engage with the members and leadership. Participate in a small group or a Bible study to get a feel for the church’s teaching and fellowship.
  • Check for Doctrinal Alignment: Ensure that the church’s doctrine aligns with the core tenets of Christianity. Do they uphold the Bible as the ultimate authority?
  • Evaluate Community Impact: A healthy church is often actively involved in its community. Assess their outreach programs and their impact on the local community.
  • Family Considerations: If you have a family, consider a church that provides age-appropriate teachings and activities for your children and youth.
  • Long-Term Growth: Look for a church that encourages and equips you for long-term spiritual growth and service.

Conclusion: Find a Good Church According to Scripture

In your search to find a good church, remember that no church is perfect. Every church is a community of redeemed sinners, striving to follow Christ. The key is to find a good church where Christ is exalted, the Word of God is faithfully taught, and the Holy Spirit is at work. As you embark on this journey, may you find a church where you can grow in faith, love, and service to our Lord Jesus Christ. Remember, being part of a church is not just about attendance; it’s about growing in a community of faith, serving and being served, loving and being loved, in the name of our Savior.

May the Lord guide you in this important decision, and may you find a spiritual home where you can thrive in your walk with Christ.
