Hello dear friends in Christ. Today, we delve into a topic that’s as intriguing as it is complex. Should the Book of Jasher be included in the Bible? This question is not just a matter of adding another book to our already rich Scripture. It goes deeper, touching on the nature of divine revelation, the integrity of Scripture, and the historical context of biblical texts.
Understanding the Book of Jasher
The Book of Jasher, mentioned in Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18, has been a subject of curiosity for many believers. These references in the Bible has led some to wonder whether it should be considered a part of the Holy Scripture. But what is the Book of Jasher? It’s believed to be a collection of early Israelite songs and poems, documenting various events in Israel’s history.
Joshua 10:13 (NIV): “So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jasher. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.”
2 Samuel 1:18 (NIV): “(David) ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jasher).”
The Concept of the Biblical Canon
Before we delve deeper, let’s understand what we mean by “the Bible’s canon.” The canon is a collection of books that Christians and Jews consider divinely inspired and authoritative. Deciding which books belong to this canon wasn’t a hasty or arbitrary process. It involved centuries of discernment, debate, and guidance by the Holy Spirit. The Protestant Bible, as we know it, consists of 66 books, whereas the Catholic and Orthodox traditions include a few more.
The Case of the Book of Jasher
- Historical Context. The Book of Jasher mentioned in the Old Testament was likely a collection of ancient Israelite writings. However, the text that we have today, claiming to be the Book of Jasher, is widely regarded by scholars as a medieval forgery, not the original document referred to in the biblical text.
- Canonicity and Authorship. The existing Book of Jasher does not meet the criteria set for canonical books. These criteria include apostolic authorship (for the New Testament), alignment with the theology and teachings of the other biblical books, and widespread acceptance by the early Church.
- Scriptural Integrity. In Revelation 22:18–19, we are warned about the grave consequences of adding to or taking away from God’s Word, This principle has guided the Church in preserving the sanctity of Scripture.
Revelation 22:18-19 (NIV): 18 “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this scroll.”
The Role of Extra-Biblical Books
While books like Jasher offer valuable historical and cultural insights, their role is not the same as that of Scripture. They can complement our understanding of biblical times and contexts but do not hold the same authority as the inspired Word of God.
The Historical and Theological Significance of Jasher
The Book of Jasher, as we have it today, provides an interesting glimpse into Jewish folklore and medieval perceptions of biblical history. However, its historical and theological discrepancies from the canonical Scripture are evident.
Conclusion: Valuing the Canon, Understanding the Excluded
In conclusion, the Book of Jasher, intriguing as it may be, does not meet the stringent criteria required for inclusion in the biblical canon. Its exclusion reflects a careful and prayerful process undertaken by the early Church to preserve the integrity and purity of the Scripture.
As followers of Christ, let us continue to delve into the riches of the Bible, always seeking to deepen our understanding and strengthen our faith. Let’s also approach extra-biblical texts like Jasher with discernment, recognizing their historical value while upholding the ultimate authority of the canonical Scriptures.
