What Will Happen to Children During the Rapture?

As we delve into one of the most heart-wrenching and frequently asked questions in Christian eschatology, What will happen to children during the Rapture?, it’s crucial to approach the topic with both sensitivity and a firm grounding in Scripture. This inquiry often arises from concerned parents and grandparents, seeking assurance about the fate of their young ones when this prophetic event unfolds.

The Rapture: A Quick Overview

Before addressing the specific question, let’s understand the concept of the Rapture, as depicted in 1 Corinthians 15:50–55. Apostle Paul clearly states that our mortal bodies cannot inherit the kingdom of God. Thus, at the Rapture, living believers and those who have died in Christ will be transformed and caught up to meet the Lord, leaving their mortal existence behind.

50 “I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ 55 ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’” 1 Corinthians 15:50-55 (NIV)

The Three Views on Children During the Rapture

Children Not Included in the Rapture: This view, grounded in the belief that the Rapture is exclusively for those who have consciously accepted Christ, suggests that children, due to their age and understanding, will not be included. Proponents reference Old Testament instances like the plagues in Egypt (Exodus 11) and the judgments on Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19), and Canaan (Joshua 11) to support their claim. However, this perspective is often criticized for its lack of New Testament context and the overarching theme of God’s grace.

All Children Raptured Before the Tribulation: Advocates of this view cite passages such as 2 Samuel 12:20–23, where King David expresses confidence in meeting his deceased child in the afterlife, and Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:13–15, where He blesses little children, indicating their belonging to the kingdom of heaven. This view suggests a universal salvation for all children, but it also raises questions about the age of accountability and individual faith.

Only Children of Believers Taken in the Rapture: This perspective, which I find most aligned with the entirety of Scripture, proposes that children of believers will be included in the Rapture, based on the notion of ‘household salvation’ seen in Scripture. For instance, 1 Corinthians 7:13–14 discusses how a believing spouse sanctifies the family, extending a covering of holiness to their children. This view resonates with the biblical precedent of God’s protective hand over the households of the faithful, as seen in Noah’s (Genesis 6–9) and Lot’s (Genesis 19) stories.

13 “And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.” 1 Corinthians 7:13-14 (NIV)

A Fourth View on Children During the Rapture | Universal Protection for the Young

An additional perspective worth considering within Christian eschatology regarding children during the Rapture is the belief that all children under the age of 15 will be raptured. This view is grounded in the understanding of a merciful and protective nature of God towards the innocence of youth. Proponents of this view argue that children under this age have not yet reached a point of mature spiritual accountability and therefore should not be subjected to the tribulations of the end times.

This concept hinges on the age of 15 being a reasonable time when young individuals are capable of making informed decisions about their faith. It suggests that by this age, children can discern the choice between accepting Jesus Christ and understanding the implications of that decision. Thus, children under 15 are provided a blanket of grace, ensuring their protection during the Rapture, regardless of the spiritual status of their parents or guardians.

This view attempts to blend the concept of divine justice with mercy, emphasizing a compassionate God who safeguards the young until they are old enough to make their own choices about faith and salvation. Supporters often cite the overarching biblical themes of God’s loving-kindness and preferential concern for the vulnerable as a basis for this belief.

Addressing the Tough Questions: Children During the Rapture

When considering the fate of the children of unbelievers, it’s essential to remember that God’s judgment is always righteous and just. While the Scriptures do not explicitly detail the fate of these children, we can trust in God’s merciful character. Additionally, the age of accountability, a concept that addresses the time when individuals become capable of making faith-based decisions, plays a crucial role in this discussion.

Conclusion: Trusting in God’s Righteousness and Preparing for the Rapture

As we ponder these views, it’s vital to remember that whatever decision God makes regarding children during the Rapture, it will not contradict His nature of righteousness and justice. The key takeaway for believers is the urgency of being ‘in Christ’ to be ready for the Rapture. This readiness is not only crucial for us but also for guiding our children in faith.

A Call to Action: Are You Ready for the Rapture?

In closing, this discussion beckons a personal reflection: Are you and your loved ones prepared for the Rapture? If uncertainty lingers in your heart, now is the moment to seek reconciliation with God, ensuring that you and your family are aligned with Christ, ready for His imminent return.
